While reading “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” I thought the conflict between Helena and Hermia to be very entertaining and funny. I personally enjoyed this play very much; it was my first time reading it. It was easy to follow being that is many stories and movies that are shown today the daughter always wants to go against her father’s wishes. It is also a common phenomena that girls tend to take the side of their boyfriend or the guy she likes; that is why Hermia probably cannot believe Lysander and Demetrius are both now in love with her friend Helena. Therefore, she is convinced they are playing a trick on her. One of my favorite parts of the play was , Act III scene II line 145 “…I see you all are bent To set against me for your merriment. If you were civil, and knew courtesy, You would not do me thus much injury.” Here Helena thinks Demetrius and Lysander are playing a cruel joke on her pretending to be in love with her. Although this is a comedy some parts of “a Midsummer Night’s Dream” are also in a way sad. Especially in Act I scene I line 79 when Hermia is defying her father’s wishes “So I will grow, so live, so die, my lord, Ere I will yield my virgin patent up Unto his lordship whose unwished yoke My soul consents not to give sovereignty.” I wouldn’t be able to imagine a world where I would have to marry someone just because my parents wanted me to and against my own wishes. These parts of the play also portray the way times used to be. Women did not have nearly of much of a choice in their own lives as they do now.
